The NSU Eye Institute at North Miami Beach is
composed of a Primary Care Optometry clinic, a Contact Lens clinic,
and a Pediatrics/Binocular Vision clinic. The clinic facility
is open weekdays from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm and on Saturday from
8:00 am - Noon. Comprehensive eye examinations and emergency
services are available during these times. The speciality clinics
are available on a part-time basis. All clinics work on an appointment-only
basis, except for emergencies.

Optometry clinics are located on the ground
floor of the Fischler Building, along with a Family Medicine
clinic and Dental clinic. There are 10 Primary Care exam
lanes, 5 Contact Lens exam lanes, and 4 Pediatric exam
lanes. In addition are numerous rooms for special procedures
and training purposes. |
Examination Areas
| Each of these exam lanes is equipped with
state-of-the-art refracting and ocular health examination
instruments. There is an electric exam chair with an
instrument stand in each room. Each stand is equipped
with a phoropter, keratometer, and a slit lamp biomicroscope
with Goldmann Tonometer and teaching tube. There is a
manual, halogen chart projector mounted in each room. |

| One exam room is equipped for wheel chair
acess and includes a moveable exam chair, which can be
replaced with a wheelchair. Two Primary Care exam rooms
are also equipped for limited low vision services. There
is one observational suite, allowing student examinations
and special cases to be observed from an adjacent room
via a two-way mirror. |
| Optical
Dispensary
|
A full-service optical dispensary and fabrication
lab are located in the facility. A licensed optician
and other dispensing opticians staff the Optical Service.
A broad selection of eyewear is available, ranging from
economy frames and lenses to the latest designer and
fashion frames. The fabrication lab provides edging and
tinting services for single vision and some multifocal
lenses. Lenses are available in glass, plastic and polycarbonate.
The Optical Service is open during the same hours as
the Primary Care clinic. |
Students provide direct patient care under the supervision
of a faculty preceptor. Professional referrals are made to
local practitioners and speciality centers as needed. An after-hours
service is available, which is staffed by optometry residents
and in consultation with licensed faculty optometrists.
